Consultation
In order to begin the process of treatment, I suggest first meeting for a consultation. This initial session is one which involves getting a sense of your current difficulties; if the approaches I offer seem like they might work for you; how often it would be best to meet; and if additional referrals such as medication, an internist, nutritionist, or a skills group seem appropriate. It is at this time we can discuss fee and scheduling arrangement. Most importantly, however, it is a time when I can see whether my experience matches your need, and you can assess whether you believe you can be helped in our work together.
Individual Psychotherapy
The term psychotherapy covers a wide range of ways of using the "talking cure" to not only help people attempt to practically solve the difficulties experienced in life, but to also assist in the process of uncovering the, often unconscious, motivations and interpersonal patterns that have led to these difficulties. I offer individual, couples, and group psychotherapy that integrates my training in relational psychoanalysis, dialectical behavioral, cognitive behavioral and humanistic/spiritual modalities. Regardless of modality, however, the ultimate goal of psychotherapy is not to simply manage your symptoms, but to affect deep and long lasting change that can help you live life to the fullest. Although a commitment, my professional and personal experience has demonstrated that the process of psychotherapy can help one achieve a more substantial and sustained degree of healing than is found in the more typical "quick fixes" of modern society.
Group Psychotherapy
Healthy Living: Reducing Self-Harm in Daily Life and Interpersonal Effectiveness
Through the Kimberly Center, I offer this DBT based group not only to help the reduction self-harming behaviors--including all types of eating disorders, addictions, cutting, or other behavioral patterns that interfere with the potential to live life with a measure of effectiveness—but, also to help individuals navigate chronic interpersonal difficulties that have served as impediments to happiness and success.
Supervision
Individuals at Risk for Self-Harm
In large part because of my tenure as a full time staff psychologist at the Center for Intensive Treatment of Personality Disorders at St. Luke’s-Roosevelt Hospital, a specialized treatment program for profound interpersonal difficulties, chronic suicidal thoughts, self-harm, eating disorders, and addictions, I am particularly adept at helping those individuals who might be struggling with self-harm and addiction. Through this specialized clinical experience, I have acquired the skill and techniques that most psychologists, psychiatrists, or social workers working in outpatient clinics or private practice are not able to develop. Having supervised others in this work, I am happy to share my experience with colleagues who are struggling with the most difficult to treat individuals.
Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender and Questioning Individuals
Research and common sense consistently suggest that navigating one's sexuality is not only a difficult task, but can increase stress, depression, and other psychological symptoms. Using my research, clinical, teaching and personal expertise in working with individuals who identify as lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender, or those who might be questioning their sexuality, I am dedicated to helping clinicians offer affirming mental health treatment of the highest quality to those who might be struggling with sexuality-related issues or concerns.
Forensic Psychological Consultant and Expert Witness
I have experience as an expert witness and litigation consultant in civil and criminal cases, both for the defendant and the prosecution/plaintiff.
Fees
I have a standard psychotherapy, consultation, and supervision fee that is my maximum fee for a 50-minute session. Although I am not currently a provider for any insurance plans, I will fill out supporting documentation required for patients who can be reimbursed by their carrier for mental health care. Please note, however, that timely payment is the responsibility of the patient, not the insurance carrier.
