Hugging Cacti: Why We Self-Sabotage and How It Can Change
Expected publication: 2026

A work of trade nonfiction examining self-sabotage as an attachment-based adaptation rooted in personality structure and internalized relational dynamics.

Why do we repeat patterns that cause us pain? Why do we push away what we most want, or remain in relationships that diminish us? Hugging Cacti explores self-sabotage not as a moral failing or lack of willpower, but as a psychological adaptation — a strategy, however painful, that once served a purpose. Drawing on attachment theory, object relations, and contemporary models of personality structure, Dr. Jones illuminates how early relational patterns become encoded in the self, shaping behavior long after they cease to be useful.
